About
Artificial intelligence (AI) efforts at Northern Illinois University are led by faculty and grounded in our dedication to student success.
Faculty and staff are developing best practices, policies and guidelines to ensure NIU’s students, faculty and staff have access to the latest AI technologies and are equipped with the skills they need to use AI effectively and ethically in the classroom, on campus, and beyond.
Task Force on Artificial Intelligence
The NIU Task Force on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Academic Affairs was established during the 2024–2025 academic year to examine the challenges and opportunities associated with AI use across Academic Affairs. The task force coordinated the development of policies and practices aligned with the university’s mission and values, gathering information, analyzing current AI-related activities and developing recommendations to support the responsible integration of AI in academic contexts. Throughout the year, the task force provided regular updates to university leadership and submitted an annual report following the spring 2025 semester outlining progress, key challenges, recommendations and proposed goals for the year ahead.

The NIU AI Network is a community of practice open to all NIU faculty, staff and students dedicated to exploring and advancing AI in ways that are ethical, equitable and aligned with our campus mission and values. The goals of the NIU AI Network are to:
- Provide a space for connecting NIU community members (including faculty, staff, and students) who work with, or are curious about AI, to learn from and with each other.
- Facilitate the discovery and sharing of AI use cases, needs and approaches that support NIU’s mission and values.
- Promote understanding of AI’s risks and trade-offs to support teaching and learning.
The AI Network meets via Microsoft Teams every other Wednesday from noon to 1 PM.
